Sentinels 5e for roleplayers In 2022 | You Must Like It | You Are All Welcome | You Will Get It. It’s pretty self-explanatory really; it’s a roleplaying game and the player’s role is to be a detective who investigates mysteries (there is plenty more to being a detective than that, but that’s the gist). My group is always looking for something fun for our games, and this week, we wanted to do a murder mystery dinner party or a murder mystery game night. We had a good time, and I thought I would share the notes I took from it in case anybody wanted to host their own. I’ve included a few suggestions on what you could do and some basic rules for the game. Enjoy! The Murder Mystery Dinner Party: What to Do (and Not to Do) For This Game

, the original post if you just want to know more about the original event. Also in this series. Here are the notes I took into the game, along with a little extra advice for those getting ready to host their own!

1. What you need

You need a set of rules for your game, as the game is not written, but it helps to have a set that you are all comfortable with. There are plenty of resources out there, but if you are short on time, we recommend the free rules from the DMsGuild. Here is our suggested set of rules in case you can’t find them there:

A character sheet to track your character and information on what you have already discovered / found

A murder mystery mystery book / magazine

2. The party

You want a set idea about your party – who are the participants?

A mystery novel or magazine that your party will read

A mystery that you can talk about: who does what to who?

An idea about the guest that will be coming (we could never guess the plot!)

3. Game master

Make sure you know each players’ backstory so you can tailor your events to their character

Know your players

Take time to introduce your players to each other – if people aren’t introduced to each other, they may have preconceptions of the characters and roleplay those preconceptions

Know and understand each player’s abilities in the game

4. Food & Drink

Cater for guests

Try to have at least 3 drinks to choose from in your menu

Have appetizers to try before dinner begins

You could also have a simple course, or a course with multiple things: soup, salad, mains, dessert

The murder mystery is easy to cater for – think of it as a game night, and cater for that – it’s not too much work

5. Party

Use the rules you will be using for the game to plan an exciting night!

Keep an eye on the room temperature, to help the game run smoothly and feel more comfortable for your guests

You’ll want to allow for about an hour to set the scene and discuss the game

There could be a short time set aside for dinner preparations

If you have more questions or want to say more about it, you can go to our original post about our Murder Mystery Game as inspiration to create your own. Do you have an idea for a murder mystery game night you are about to host? Let us know!
