If you are anything like me, then you will also be very confused by the vast amount of information available on this subject – especially when it comes to footwear choices. When I began researching the subject, I found dozens of articles that contradicted each other and all seemed to be written by people desperate to sell their own products.

So instead of doing that, I have decided to provide you with some evidence-based information that will help you when it comes to managing your condition. But before we get into footwear choices, let’s take a look at what plantar fasciitis actually is.

Plantar fasciitis is an injury to the plantar fascia or the thick band of tissue on the sole of the foot that stretches from the ball to the heel. The pain usually occurs in one specific part of this tissue but sometimes can be more widespread if there are multiple areas of damage.

1. What is plantar fasciitis and how does it affect me?

Plantar fasciitis is a chronic injury. That means that although it can be managed, there is currently no cure for the condition. In fact, the only way to treat a completely torn plantar fascia is through surgery which would leave you unable to walk on the damaged area for weeks or even months. What this means for us, is that we need to adopt a new way of thinking about footwear and exercise choices if we want to remain active while also treating our plantar fasciitis. We cannot continue as before but must instead become smarter with our choices!

2. How to identify the symptoms of plantar fasciitis

The most common symptom of plantar fasciitis is pain, usually at the front or side of the heel. This will be made worse by physical activity but can also occur while you are inactive (or even when awake during the night). It may feel like your heel is sprained or this condition could make it feel like you have woken up with serious shin splints. If you experience any of these symptoms, there is a very good chance that you are suffering from plantar fasciitis.

The reason for this is simple: If there isn’t enough room in the shoe for your foot, then this can result in damage to other areas such as the heel or mid-foot which would prolong your recovery time. Furthermore, wearing a shoe with a supportive sole can help protect you from developing other injuries in the future.

2. Shoes with good heel support

One of the most common causes of plantar fasciitis is wearing shoes that have a low heel-forefoot height ratio. In other words, when your foot strikes the ground during walking or running, it should do so in a way that stretches out the arch and lengthens your calf muscles while absorbing shock using the natural cushioning in your mid-sole. I’ve used them now on several occasions for different foot pain issues and have found them highly beneficial every time. The custom orthotics come in two parts but once you put them together then this is basically a rigid sole that holds your foot in place perfectly while providing both cushioning and protection against excessive movement. They may not look very stylish but I have to say that they are extremely comfortable once you get used to them.

4. Spenco Total Support Insoles

These are actually quite different from the PolySorb ones mentioned above because they only provide arch support and no additional cushioning for your forefoot or heel. However, I was still impressed with how well this worked out given how my feet were kept firmly in place while being able to move enough during walking/running (at least for someone who does not suffer from excessive pronation). As a bonus, these come with 3mm of extra padding at the heel which is always welcome, especially if you tend to walk barefoot often or wear sandals on some occasions when it gets really hot outside.

5. Why you should use a recovery sandal with orthotics, even if you don’t have plantar fasciitis

I think the main reason why someone might prefer using these types of shoes rather than just having orthotic insoles in their usual footwear is that they are much more practical when it comes to wearing different types of shoes. Walking/running in recovery sandals for plantar fasciitis with arch support will be far better for your feet in terms of providing superior stability and cushioning but if you really cannot or do not want to walk around all day with them then there is nothing wrong with simply wearing a good quality pair of orthotics inside your favorite flats, sneakers or even flip-flops (there are many styles which allow you access to the front part of your foot for this).
