The Crown of Madness 5e is a spell that forces the creature to make a Wisdom saving throw. If they fail, they are stunned for 1 minute and then controlled by the caster. The control lasts until the end of their next turn or if they take damage from another source. This spell has been updated in 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons due to changes in how stun works.

The crown of madness was changed because it could be used as an infinite stunlock on many creatures with no save against it while also preventing them from taking other actions such as attacking or casting spells (5e SRD). Since this spell was change, we’ll focus on the original effect and how it would translate to 5e.

The crown of madness doesn’t specifically say that the target needs to make a Wisdom saving throw so it may be necessary for the DM to determine if they need to roll or not. This will depend on many factors such as intelligence, wisdom, or charisma modifiers.

If it is determine that they don’t need to roll then this spell would become just like the confusion spell, an incapacitating effect. The confusion spell also doesn’t state that you must make a wisdom save so some DMs may think that the crown of madness should be treat the same way.

If the target does make the saving throw, they are stunned for 1 minute which could be changed to incapacitated. If the creature is already incapacitate when using this spell then they fall asleep.

If you make a wisdom save against the crown of madness while you are not stune or otherwise incapacitate, you are unaffect by it and can act normally on your next turn (5e SRD).

A DM may decide that this is a mind-affecting spell and that they must roll against their wisdom saving throw in order to resist the effects. If you want to keep it as written, using incapacitation instead of stunning them will make this spell more powerful as it prevents the creature from attacking, casting spells, or even moving (5e SRD).

The crown of madness deals psychic damage which doesn’t exist in 5th edition dungeons and dragons without homebrew content. So if you use this spell and deal damage you should just say that the target takes damage equal to your spell attack bonus and save yourself some time.

What is the crown of madness spell and how does it work

The crown of madness spell is use to control the mind and body of a creature. The caster must be within 5 ft. of the target, who must make a Wisdom saving throw or fall under your control for 1 minute.

While you are in control, you can cause the creature to take an action by using your bonus action on each turn. You can also impose a disadvantage on one ability check made by the creature per round.

The spell ends if you move more than 60 feet away from it, if it succeeds its original save against this effect, or if someone else takes an action to end it (such as casting dispel magic). This is a mind-affecting spell (5th edition Dungeons and Dragons SRD).

How to use the crown of madness spell

You must be within 5 feet of a creature to cast this spell. That creature must make a Wisdom saving throw or fall under your control for 1 minute.

While you control the creature, you can cause it to take any action as long as it doesn’t exceed its movement speed and does not deal damage, requires an attack roll, or forces another saving throw from that creature.

The target will also have a disadvantage on ability checks made with their lowest ability score for as long as they are hypnotic by this spell.

This effect ends if you move more than 60 feet away from the subject, if they succeed on their original save against this spell, or if someone else takes an action to end the effect (such as with dispel magic). The creature will act normally on their next turn after you hypnotize them (5e SRD).

The problem with 5th edition dungeons and dragons is that there are few mind-affecting spells. This means that if you choose to play a caster who makes use of these types of magic, you might have to swap out your best spells for others.

Otherwise, using this spell would mean denying yourself access to other great debuffs like blindness/deafness. It’s also important not to forget about the fact that one round in the 5th edition is 6 seconds long where it could be 10 rounds in the 3rd edition which boils down to 6 seconds x 10 = 1 minute.

Whose mind can be affect by the crown of madness spell

The crown of madness spell affects any creature with an intelligence score of 3 or higher so long as it fails its wisdom saving throw against your spellcasting ability check. Some creatures are immune to this effect, however, such as undead, constructs, and plants.

Even though you could theoretically use this spell on a beast that has an intelligence score lower than 3 it wouldn’t have any real effect because beasts automatically fail their saving throws (5e SRD).

Crown of madness spell variant rule for 5th edition dungeons and dragons

In the 3rd edition, there were two effects that allow you to affect a target’s mind. The crown of madness effect works like this: While the creature is under the effect of an enchantment or illusion spell, it can’t take actions or reactions, but at each turn, it can make a saving throw against the controlling spell with a penalty on the roll (if any) determine by how much of its concentration was affect by your enchanting/illusion spells. It automatically gets a saving throw to end this effect at any point when it takes damage (3e CRB).

When dealing with the crown which allows you to stun instead of control I believe that so long as you meet the requirements need to cast crown of madness and you succeed in your spellcasting ability check to do so, your target is stunned.

I believe this rule could work because in the 3rd edition there were no set rules for how long a creature stays under an enchantment or illusion effect.
